Dr. Arunaloke Chakrabarti

Dr. Arunaloke Chakrabarti is currently the President-elect of International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM), Past President of Indian Society of Medical Mycologists (ISMM), Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM)..

He is coordinator of the ISHAM working group on ‘Fungal sinusitis’ and ‘ABPA in asthmatics’, and hold the chair of Asian Fungal Working Group under ISHAM. His major contribution is in the field of epidemiology of fungal sinusitis, sporotrichosis, mucormycosis, and hospital acquired fungal infections. He is pioneer towards development of the discipline of Medical Mycology and laboratories in India. His laboratory is only WHO approved center in the world ‘WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Fungi of Medical Importance’ and also recognized as ‘Center of Advanced Research in Medical Mycology’ in India. He set up ‘National Culture Collection of Pathogenic Fungi’ at PGIMER Chandigarh, India .

He also serves as Editors of mainly leading international journals and delivered lectured worldwide and published more than 300 papers in high reputed journals. He also wrote many book chapters. He edited the book ‘Fungal Infections in Asia-The Eastern Frontier of Mycology’. He received multiple awards from National Societies, Academies of India, and was awarded the Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc) and Fellow Infectious Disease Society of America (FIDSA). Recently Prof. Arunaloke Chakrabarti received 2022 ASM Moselio Schaechter Award by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) for exemplary leadership and commitment towards the substantial furthering the microbiology profession in research, education and technology in the developing world. 3 recently discovered fungi were named after him honoring his contribution to medical mycology i.e., Malassezia arunalokei, Cunninghamella arunalokei and Exophiala arunalokei .
